WATCH INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR

Why does Hemingway escape to Ireland as he fakes his death on July 2, 1961?

He says Ireland was the place to go for him just like it was for the boxer Sean Thornton in the movie The Quiet Man.  He was surprised to meet up with Irish actress Maureen O’Hara (Mary Kate Danaher) from the film.

This fictional account of Hemingway’s new life in Ireland as a retired American war reporter introduces the author to history and culture, as well as literature, music and sport:

  • He learns about Sean Treacy, of the Third Tipperary Brigade, War of Irish Independence 1919

  • Visits James Joyce’s Dublin (an old friend of the author)

  • Meets John B. Keane, the author and playwright – Hemingway (now Matt Fitzgerald) is in awe of the Kerryman of letters

  • Is introduced to Vincent O’Brien, the great horse trainer of Ballydoyle

  • Visits beautiful Mt. Juliet in Kilkenny, Coolmore in Co. Tipperary, Thomond Park and Munster Rugby in Co. Limerick

  • Listens to the poetry of a twenty-two year old poet from the North of Ireland, Seamus Heaney, and the music of a sixteen year old phenom from Belfast, Van Morrison and his band The Monarchs
